Mark IV style, motherfucker!

The Devil May Cry franchise is the Street Fighter of action games. Very Japanese, over the top, doesn't take itself seriously BUT the gameplay is a tremendously deep and intuitive combat system. The mantra of the franchise is "stylish action". The first Devil May Cry was a revolution in action games. To put it bluntly, without Devil May Cry there would be no template for games like God of War to rip-off and dumb down. 2 was a disaster because it was a rush job. 3 was a glorious return to form and raised the bar tremendously, introducing innovative mechanics like on-the-fly, mid-combo weapon-switching. It was so good there was a mini-arms race between it and Ninja Gaiden (Black vs DMC3: Special Edition) that pushed the genre forward very quickly. 2001-2005 were to action games what the mid-to-late 90s was to PC FPS. It layed the foundation for the genre, creating permanent standards and fundamental mechanics for the genre. 4 was ok, not bad but not great. Dante, DMC's main character, took the back seat to a new character and a new gameplay mechanic based on said character. But it sold well, over a million on each HD console.

So what does Capcom do? They outsource the game to an unproven western developer and reboot the franchise. Problem is said western developer Ninja Theory has shown no propensity whatsoever in being able to come up with a great combat engine. Kung Fu Chaos didn't have one, Heavenly Sword didn't have one, Enslaved doesn't have one (demo is out on Euro PSN). Their first order of business? They change Dante's trademark appearance (white hair, red trenchcoat, giant demonic sword, athletic build, frequent grinning due to a cocky attitude, trash-talking) an appearance he's had for 9 years, to look like a Twilight vampire on crystal meth who is super serious, dark, and brooding. The wacky Japanese tone that reflects the gameplay the series had for 9 years is gone. We're not simply mad because they changed Dante's appearance. We're mad because an unproven western developer did so when it wasn't needed. It was a poor decision and we fear what other poor decisions they'll make in the game's development.

Or I could just post this image instead which also sums it up:

Also here's a really good analysis by Gamasutra regarding the tone of the series, it's loss, and why we'd feel disconnected and discontent as a result:

And here's another funny image that sums it all up:

There are two questions we must ask here. One, why the fuck DMC needed to be rebooted and two, why this game couldn't have been a completely new franchise. The setting seems more gritty than DMC and the character looks nothing like Dante. I mean yes it would have needed to be changed a little to not look like a DMC clone, but you get the basic idea. In the end, this game is not a Devil May Cry game to me and I'm highly disappointed we'll never be able to see franchise's story truly completed.

Also, those comic strips are complete wins throwme1.

Hm, that seems pretty terrible. I guess I can't really judge it before I've played it since I have no emotional attachment to the series, but that seems extremely stupid to just change the guy like that.

My prediction. This completely bombs and Capcom makes a statement about not outsourcing IPs then they make DMC5 on next gen consoles.
